Vowel Patterns
- Spring 2nd Grade Expectation
- Reads words with the most common vowel patterns, including vowel teams and r-controlled vowels.
- What It Looks Like
- Reads 'rain', 'boat', 'coin', 'star', and 'bird'.

By the spring of 2nd grade (May–June), children typically read most one- and two-syllable words with common vowel patterns, and are starting to read words with prefixes and suffixes, like 'unpack' and 'helpful'. They read grade-level text more smoothly and with expression, and many are starting to read early chapter books. The national median reading rate at this point is about 100 words read correctly per minute (Hasbrouck & Tindal, 2017).

Once at Home gives you short, scripted lessons that any adult can teach one-on-one in about 15 minutes a day. Each lesson tells you exactly what to say and do, so your child builds reading skills step by step at their own pace. It's free until your child reads their first 3-letter word.
