Teachers, families and kids love Once

The reading specialist was concerned that my daughter may have dyslexia. She was also diagnosed with ADHD inattentive around the same time, so I wanted to give her more time to catch up on her reading skills once she had medication. With 504 accommodations in place and the implementation of the Once Reading program, the reading specialist and I decided to wait until the beginning of this year to determine if we wanted to initiate special education testing to look at dyslexia.

Today, I met with the reading specialist to figure out what the plan will be. She revealed an increase on the [redacted] test from last spring to now in encoding from high risk to no longer high risk, real word decoding from high risk to nearly a perfect score, pseudoword decoding from high risk to a perfect score. Oral reading fluency didn’t really change and passage retell was always strong. She and I are both very impressed with this improvement. This is especially true considering regression that typically occurs, and did occur last year, over the summer.

Spring Creek Elementary starts DAY 1 with ONCE Reading Interventions! Every student with ONCE Para every 15 minutes EVERYDAY.

The feedback I received from the Career Education students who served as mentors for kindergarteners was refreshing. They all felt they were truly making a positive difference for the kindergartners and supporting the literacy initiative in our district. They really saw the big picture.

One of the CTE instructors confirmed his decision to pursue a career in teaching because of his work with the kindergarten students and Once. His parents, who are also teachers, were thrilled about his experience.

Both of my kids have audibly gasped during parts of the Once story. It really holds their attention and interest.

While our district does have a very strong literacy plan that we are constantly reviewing and improving based on our data, the addition of the Once program as an intervention for Kindergarten has been a gamechanger for our students. We have seen a 9-point improvement on the DIBELS screener for Kindergarten with nothing else changing in our core curriculum and literacy plan other than this addition. We are so pleased with the results that we are extending this support to all students in 1st grade.

I've been using Once for the past 6 weeks with my son (age 4.5). Seeing his progress from Cycle 1 to 35 has been deeply satisfying. I love the product you've built.

• The UI's simplicity: short instructions and minimal distraction

• The diversity of activities in a regular pattern

• The dramatic story (a fire?!)

• The very light gamification of puzzle pieces, a photo and especially, a book

Every child in America should experience Once. It would solve so many problems.

The impact of this work is reflected in our district's literacy outcomes. In August 2025, only 3% of incoming kindergarten students demonstrated kindergarten readiness. By the end of the school year (PM3), districtwide kindergarten proficiency had increased to 60%, out performing the state average and representing an 8-percentage-point improvement over the district's 2024–2025 PM3 results. While multiple initiatives contributed to this success, the Once Program served as a critical component of our comprehensive early literacy strategy by providing targeted, high-impact support to students most in need of intervention.

The combination of scripted, research-based lessons, individualized pacing, and weekly coaching support created a high-fidelity implementation model that produced measurable results. Feedback from school administrators, teachers, tutors, and families has been overwhelmingly positive, and the student growth data clearly demonstrate that the investment in high-impact tutoring is yielding meaningful returns. Based on the outcomes achieved, Okeechobee County views the Once Program as a highly successful component of our comprehensive literacy improvement efforts and a valuable strategy for addressing early reading gaps.

We are on lesson 130 in Once and my child was able to tackle this passage.

The way it was setup was helpful to myself. Putting away my Mac cut down on distractions. The fill in the blank notes are MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE as someone with crippling ADHD. I was excited to see those. I love taking paper notes, especially fill in the blank ones. The tickets helped me to raise my hand and answer questions, when I normally wouldn't of. As an elder millennial, I love a participation prize. The modeling was INCREDIBLE. Thank you so so much for everything. LITERALLY best PD ever.

The amount of explicit practice was the most helpful part of this seminar. Too often we are given PD with excellent strategies but never taught how to actually implement them with our current resources. The time that your team took to integrate connected phonation into our resource, as well as the time for us to create lessons is what really took this PD to the next level. I am now confident that this is something I will be able to implement with teachers next year. Your team was knowledgeable and positive. All of the new information was paced well and explained in a way that was clear and easy to understand. This was fantastic!

All of the opportunities to practice what was taught was extremely helpful. The presenters did a fantastic job of cultivating a safe and encouraging environment so even if I made a mistake, I didn't feel a sense of shame or failure.

Last year's kindergarten class (no Once) ended the school year with 46% below benchmark on our EOY DIBELS. This year's kindergarten class (with Once) had only two students well below benchmark on EOY DIBELS.

My child and I finished cycle 10 yesterday so we're on our way. I've taught my three older kids to read, and I'm excited for how this is helping with my youngest's enunciation already. She's 5.5, and we'll homeschool her from here on out. She's excited to be learning, although sometimes balks at repetition. Your system helps me be "by her side" rather than being the teacher role. "We" are learning to read, not me teaching her to read. With her, that seems to work better.

My team was incredibly impressed when they watched Once instruction, and my team is incredibly hard to impress. You will grow in Louisiana, especially after today. People hearing how great you are will make a difference.

The mom of the child I was working with this year just shared the following from an email the school sent her: DIBELS Growth (Fall-Spring): Score change +190 — Well Above Average. Your child made much more progress than most students with similar starting skills.

At times this year, I felt that I was not doing my best and worried that I was not meeting my students' needs. However, the Once coach and support team were incredibly helpful and encouraging. Their guidance made a meaningful difference, and I truly appreciated the support throughout the year.

I just completed the first chapter of Once with my 6 year old who has been struggling to find the motivation to read. He didn't want to go to bed, just kept wanting to keep going. He was like "this is so fun!!!"

It was something that gave my kids the little boost they needed while learning to read and I loved it. I just wish it was something that was implemented earlier in the year so our existing schedule had more time to build around it.

I 💗 Once! The program has helped my students become more confident with their sounds and words. The familiar format and fun characters have created a joyful learning environment. The intimacy of the program — the proximity and the daily interaction — has helped me form even better relationships and rapport with my students.

This is an excellent program that I wish we could have again, not just for kindergarten pupils but even for students in other grade levels who need help with the foundations of reading. With fidelity and consistency, a child can really read in a short period of time through this system.

As hesitant as I was in the beginning, I can honestly say it wasn't as bad as I thought. I believe my students made tremendous progress throughout the year and they were excited to put in the work. The story was entertaining as well as educational. My coach always pushed us to push our kids a little harder, in turn making them more independent and giving them the confidence they needed to succeed.

The Once program is a great addition to the instruction students are already receiving in their classroom. It was nice to see the students show significant growth and enthusiasm with the program.

Here at our school we have seen great growth in students participating in this program. We are excited to implement it next year. One area that is challenging is finding the staff to work with the students since it is a one-on-one intervention.
