School-based support staff provide all instruction in the Once Early-Reading Program. Here's what they are saying about Once.
I think it’s an amazing program
Overall, I think once is a great program. I would recommend!
I loved working with my students and seeing how far they had progressed. Reading is such an important to skill, and not having a solid foundation really sets the tone for their educational path. I loved the resources that were available to instructors as well, because there were times where I was unsure about a concept, but I was able to look at the instructional videos to gain a better understanding.
I enjoyed my Once experience and I loved seeing the growth in the students I worked with. Danny was a key contributor to building my instructional confidence and helped me make high leverage tweaks as I needed them. I appreciate his weekly dose of positivity and encouragement.
This is an excellent progrm that I wish we could have again, not just for Kindergarten pupils but even for students in other grade levels who need help with the foundations of reading especially phonics. With fidelity and consistency, a child can really read in a short period of time through the system.
Great instructional resource for teaching reading. I loved it! I hope more special education teachers can learn to use it!
Here at Takoma we have seen great growth in students participating in this program. We are excited to implement it next year. One area that is challenging is finding the staff to work with the students since it is a one-on-one intervention. We hope to increase our caseload but finding the staff to be available for that chunk of time during the day is difficult. We will do our best.
I think it is a great program. Well thought out and easy to follow and institute.
I love that it's scripted for teachers. I also like the verbiage (i.e., "say it fast") and like that I can use it during my instruction during the day.
I do feel like the students have benefitted from this program. I would love to see the progress of a beginning of the year kindergartener to the end of the year.
I am impressed with the program
We appreciate all you've done to bring this to St. B! It's been great working with you, and we look forward to more time with Once in the future.
I have seen growth with the students I work with.
Overall, I think the program went very well this year and it was great to see students growth with the program and my learning from delivering the program as well. I am excited to see students EOY DIBELS results as well.
I thought it was a great support curriculum for students who have already had some foundational knowledge (e.g. letter recognition, sounds). I am curious as to how the program can better support Emergent Bilingual students.
As hesitant as I was in the beginning I can honestly say that it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I believe my students made tremendous progress throughout the year and they were excited to put in the work. The story was entertaining as well as educational (I'm actually sad I won't get to the end). The prompts were easy to read/understand and relay to the students. Corey was great to work with as she always pushed us to push our kids a little harder, in turn making them more independent and giving them the confidence they needed to succeed. The most difficult part of the program at least for me was the time restraints as I only had an hour to fit in 3 students that needed to be pulled from classrooms all over the building. To whoever is reading this thank you for creating a program that not only engages the students but also teaches them and lets them learn at their own pace.
The once program is a great addition to the instruction students are already receiving in their classroom. It was nice to see the students show significant growth and enthusiasm with the program. It was also nice to have a consistent coach that was flexible and provided great feedback. It became a bit challenging juggling this with the other responsibilities and the ever changing schedules we as resource teachers are assigned to. It would be nice in the ideal world having a support staff specifically for the once program to implement consistently.
It was something that gave my kids the little boost they needed while learning to read and I loved it. I just wish it was something that was implemented earlier in the year so our existing schedule had more time to build around it.
I enjoyed the simplicity of the program.
It’s a really good program for struggling readers.
