What Alabama families should know
The CHOOSE Act has separate award amounts for participating schools and home education, plus annual eligibility and spending rules.
$2,000 per home-education student
Alabama lists $2,000 per participating home-education student, capped at $4,000 per family. Participating-school students may receive $7,000.
Income limit for 2026–27
Students must be Alabama residents in grades K5–12, with household income at or below 300% of the federal poverty level for the preceding tax year.
Use funds by June 30
The 2026–27 academic year runs July 1 through June 30. Alabama says unused funds return to the CHOOSE Act Fund.

What is Alabama’s CHOOSE Act?
The CHOOSE Act creates refundable income tax credits called education savings accounts for eligible Alabama students in grades K5–12. Families use the funds for qualified education expenses from providers approved by the Alabama Department of Revenue.
Who is eligible for Alabama CHOOSE Act funds in 2026–27?
For the 2026–27 academic year, the student must be an Alabama resident in grades K5–12 and the household’s adjusted gross income must not exceed 300% of the federal poverty level for the 2025 tax year. Awards are subject to program priorities and available funding.
How much funding is available for homeschool families?
Alabama lists $2,000 per participating student in a home education program, capped at $4,000 per family. Students enrolled in a participating school may receive $7,000 per student. The state determines each award.
Can CHOOSE Act funds pay for reading curriculum?
