A parent-delivered Once implementation
Is this the same as an app students use on their own?
No. Once is adult-led. Parents open the scripted lesson online and teach their child directly, one-to-one. Children then practice with physical decodable books that follow the same instructional sequence.
Do parents need teaching experience?
No. The lesson script tells the parent what to say, what to show, and how to respond. The sequence is already planned, so families can focus on the child rather than preparing instruction.
How much time does the program require from families?
Families use Once for 5–15 minutes at a time, several times each week. Short, consistent sessions are designed to fit around work, school, meals, and bedtime.
Which children is Once at Home designed for?
Once at Home is designed for children ages 3–7. The sequence begins with letter sounds and builds toward blending, sentences, and connected stories, with a path from no reading ability to a 2nd-grade reading level.
Can Spanish-speaking families use the program?
Yes. The parent-facing lesson script is available in Spanish, so Spanish-speaking adults can lead the same structured reading lessons at home.
Does this replace classroom literacy instruction?
No. It gives districts a way to extend explicit, one-to-one reading practice beyond the school day. Classroom instruction remains essential; Once helps families contribute consistent additional practice at home.
