We're excited to share some examples of Once’s decodable booklets featuring our Dot Bot characters! Our instructional content includes booklets that students can take with them and read outside of their daily Once sessions, and we have made some of those booklets freely and publicly available here.
Each of these booklets corresponds to a particular point in our curriculum. They are decodables, meaning that they are designed to be read independently by students who have reached that point. Having progressed that far into the curriculum, the students will have learned everything they need to decode the words in that booklet. The booklets should be used to help students practice decoding and to develop their habits around independent reading. (They are not intended for guided reading or for the development of content knowledge.)
These decodables are printable. Anyone can freely download, print, fold, staple, and share these booklets. (To print, select “print on both sides of the paper” and “flip on the short edge” in your print menu. Fold the printed pages along the dashed line in the center, then staple on top of the three staple images on the front cover.) When one student finishes reading the booklet, you can pass it on to the next student who is ready for it. Or you can create one copy for each student who is ready for it and tell them that they can color the pictures when they finish reading it.
We think these booklets are a great way to help students build their confidence and fluency. They're also a lot of fun! We hope you enjoy them.
