This task requires students to read words that contain the or letter combination and that also contain consonant blends. Students are not asked to identify the letter combination or its sound before reading the word.
This is the first task in which students will read -VCe pattern words (in a serif font) in which the vowel that changes its sound is e. Unlike the countless -VCe pattern words in which an a, i, or o changes its sound, these words are relatively rare.
